The Covid pandemic has changed how we live and clarified what really matters to us. Two of the many things that will be its legacy include the desire for easily accessible park space and the popularity and convenience of bike riding. While the under utilized Toronto Islands are going through a Master Planning exercise, it is time to push for an inspiring fixed link. This structure can be an easy way for pedestrians, cyclists (and potentially small scale electric service vehicles) to access the Island’s parks without needing to use the inconvenient ferry system. Within easy reach of the Martin Goodman Trail, this structure (that includes a swing bridge for commercial vessels) with a mid span terrace and parkette, would also be a desired amenity for the redeveloped Portlands as they come to life.
